Update: Coronavirus Impact on Travel - Additional Travel Restrictions
Today, the US and many European countries extended travel restrictions and in some cases instituted country-wide lockdowns to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.
These actions are summarized below:
- The Spanish government announced it will order a nationwide lockdown, effective Monday, March 16 at 8AM CET (7:00AM GMT).
- The US Department of Homeland Security announced they are extending the European travel ban to the UK and Ireland, effective at midnight Monday, March 16, 2020.
- The travel restriction does not apply to legal permanent residents, (generally) immediate family members of US citizens, and other individuals who are identified in the original proclamation -- all of whom will undergo appropriate health screenings upon entry to the United States.
- The governments of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland and Spain announced measures alongside Italy to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, including restricting entry into and out of each country. We anticipate more European countries to follow.
We have proactively messaged travel admins and impacted travelers to share the above information and remind them that TripActions travel agents are available 24/7 via chat should they need to change travel plans. We also noted that if and when waivers apply for travel changes, our travel agents will apply them accordingly to help save money. We will continue monitoring new bookings and will reach out to travelers with potentially impacted travel.
We will continue to update this post as the situation evolves.
