U.S. adds restrictions on travel from Europe, excluding the U.K.

Wed., Mar 11, 2020, 8:35pm PST

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a Presidential Proclamation which suspends the entry of most foreign nationals who have been in certain European countries at any point during the 14 days prior to their scheduled arrival to the United States. The travel restrictions are set to take effect the evening of Friday, March 13, 2020, and are expected to last for 30 days.

The list of countries includes: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The travel restriction does not apply to legal permanent residents, (generally) immediate family members of U.S. citizens, and other individuals who are identified in the proclamation — all of whom will likely have to undergo appropriate health screenings upon entry to the United States.

The official press release from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is available here.

Earlier today, the coronavirus was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. China, Iran, Italy, and South Korea remain at a Level 3 travel health notice by the CDC which recommends individuals avoid all non-essential travel to the countries. Foreign nationals who have been in China and Iran at any point during the 14 days prior to their scheduled arrival to the United States already face similar restrictions as noted above for European countries.

TripActions travel agents remain available 24/7 via chat should travelers need to change their travel plans as a result of the new travel restrictions. If and when waivers apply for travel, our travel agents will apply them accordingly to help save money.

We will continue monitoring new bookings and will reach out to travelers with potentially impacted travel. We will also continue to provide updates here on our blog and in the coronavirus dashboard available in the TripActions Admin Dashboard.

  • Good to see it isn't a ban on all travel from Europe, but restrictions like what are currently in place for China and Iran. Thanks for posting.
